We all know how the right herb can add new life to a recipe. And medical research indicates that some herbs may have the same effect on us.</p>
<p>The popular herbal potions of today promise better sleep, less fatigue, reduced anxiety, even help in the battle against depression. And the herbal answers to these ailments are nothing new.</p>
<p>History of Herbal Supplements<br />
Herbal medicine is rooted in ancient traditions. Texts dating back to 2500 BC speak of the ability of herbal remedies to restore harmony to an imbalanced, unhealthy body.<br />
<span id="more-124"></span><br />
Garlic and juniper have been common medicines for about 4,000 years. Research suggests that Egyptians in the era of Ramses III used poppy extracts to calm children.</p>
<p>It wasn&#8217;t until the 1700s that herbalists sought to identify the individual chemicals in the plants. Once separated from the plant itself, these compounds took on new properties. In the last 150 years, these compounds have been used to create pharmaceutical drugs.</p>
<p>Herbs Today<br />
Today, herbal supplements comprise an industry all their own. According to a recent poll, about 60 million adults take herbal supplements. Proponents say they can help with everything from chronic illnesses to more mundane complaints, such as insomnia,, headaches, fatigue, even the common cold.</p>
<p>The category &#8220;herb&#8221; includes any plant with culinary or medicinal value. That includes the botanicals we associate with contemporary pharmaceuticals, as well as the herbal supplements we purchase, and, of course, the herbs we use to enhance the flavor of our food, such as garlic and sage. Today, the practice of a western herbalist primarily draws on 150 to 200 plants.</p>
<p>Because herbs are promoted as all natural, alternative medicines, consumers tend to think of them more as vitamins than as actual drugs. But experts say these botanical remedies are just as, or more, potent, than their pharmaceutical counterparts, so it is important to exercise caution.</p>

<p>Maggie Greenwood Robinson, PhD., author of Kava: The Ultimate Guide to Nature&#8217;s Anti Stress Herb, recommends buying herbal supplements only from a well known and trusted manufacturer.</p>
<p>&#8220;Herbal products vary in potency due to a number of factors, one of which is the original plant itself,&#8221; she says. &#8220;It may have more or less of the active ingredients than other members of the crop. The extraction process varies, too, and may affect potency. A consumer interested in purchasing herbal supplements should do so on the basis of manufacturer reputation.&#8221;</p>
<p>Cautions<br />
According to the International Food Information Council, the FDA has listed the following herbal supplements as &#8220;risky&#8221;: Chaparral, comfrey, DHEA, dieter&#8217;s tea with senna, aloe, rhubarb root, buckthorn, cascara, caster oil, penny royal, and sassafras.</p>
<p>Greenwood Robinson says some of us should stay away from herbs altogether. &#8220;Anyone who is pregnant or nursing should avoid herbs. If there are herbs in the home, they should be kept out of the reach of children, just as you would keep medicines out of reach,&#8221; she says. And she does not recommend herbal remedies for children.</p>
<p>Mothers trying to conceive should avoid echinacea purpura, St. John&#8217;s wort, and gingko biloba. Recent research indicates a possible connection between these herbals and infertility.</p>
<p>Ask your doctor for information on dosages for herbal supplements, as well as possible interactions with other drugs. If the manufacturer is a trusted one, follow the recommended dosages on the label, and do not exceed them.</p>
<p>If the supplement you choose provides a dosage range on the label, always begin with the smallest dose, and stop taking the supplement immediately if you sense any sort of allergic reaction, which can range from hives to difficulty breathing.</p>
<p>Common Herbs and Their Uses</p>
<p>Cellasene<br />
&#8220;For health and beauty,&#8221; Greenwood Robinson says, &#8220;the big news in herbal supplements is a category I call cellulite control supplements.&#8221;</p>
<p>Greenwood Robinson discusses the merits of this herb in her book, The Cellulite Breakthrough. Cellasene, Greenwood Robinson says, contains a mixture of herbs with multiple benefits, one of which is to improve &#8220;microcirculation&#8221; in the network of tiny vessels in the body. Poor microcirculation is thought to contribute to the development and progression of cellulite.</p>
<p>Echinacea<br />
&#8220;Sipping a cup of Echinacea tea may put cold symptoms on the run, or even shorten the course of a cold,&#8221; Greenwood Robinson says. Research shows that the herb is effective in stimulating the immune system for its fight against viruses and bacteria.&#8221; Echinacea is potent, and many experts don&#8217;t recommend it for prolonged use (and some researchers caution against taking Echinacea for more than 10 days.)</p>
<p>Evening Primrose Oil (EPO)<br />
Hailed as a beauty herb, this supplement claims to help you grow healthy skin, hair, and nails. Other studies show it can help alleviate premenstrual syndrome.</p>
<p>Garlic<br />
Long hailed as a natural antibiotic, garlic can stimulate the immune system, so it is a popular supplement among those wishing to ward of colds and bronchitis. Research suggests garlic may help prevent bacterial or fungal infections, including yeast infections.</p>
<p>Garcinia cambogia<br />
Also known as HCA (hydroxycitric acid), this supplement is found predominately in a particular Southeast Asian fruit. The extract is similar to citric acid, and it is often used for dieting and appetite suppression.</p>
<p>Ginger<br />
Like garlic, ginger is a culinary herb as well as a medicinal herb, so it is considered extremely safe. Experts say this herb, grown primarily in India, China, and Mexico, may help everything from chemotherapy suffering to painful menstruation. But it ius best known as an aid for digestion. &#8220;It is a near cure for nausea and works quite fast,&#8221; Greenwood Robinson says. &#8220;It is also an excellent anti inflammatory herb that is effective in treating various types of headaches, as well as joint pain.&#8221;</p>
<p>Gingko biloba<br />
This is one of the most prescribed herbals in Europe. Its popularity has surged in the United States, as well. Experts say it improves blood circulation throughout the body. This enhanced circulation in the brain aids concentration and memory.</p>
<p>Ginseng<br />
Both varieties of ginseng (Panax and Siberian ginseng) have a solid reputation for energy enhancement. This herb can be taken on a daily basis, but be careful. Possible side effects include breast tenderness and high blood pressure.</p>
<p>HTP (hydroxytryptophan)<br />
HTP is a popular supplement in the United States for its ability to reduce anxiety, depression and insomnia. Some experts say this herb might help control obesity, too.</p>
<p>Kava<br />
Kava Kava is also prescribed for everyday anxiety, as well as for painful menstrual cramps. Experts say it can help with insomnia, too.</p>
<p>St. John&#8217;s Wort<br />
The flower of this plant blooms around St. John&#8217;s day, and when you squeeze the flowers, out comes a red pigment, which is associated with the blood of St. John the Baptist. In the United States, this herb is best known for its ability to improve mood and diminish anxiety, and it is often prescribed in Germany for anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders.</p>

<strong>DECLINING NUTRITIONAL VALUE IN FRUITS AND VEGETABLES MAY BE A CONCERN.</strong></p>
<p>For years the debate has raged on about the benefits and drawbacks of modern farming techniques. Industrial agriculture or &#8220;hyper-farming&#8221; has resulted in giant strides in crop yield, but many claim nutrient content &#8211; and thus their total nutritional value to humans &#8211; has been suffering.<br />
The average yield in terms of bushels per acre for major crops in the US has sky rocketed since the 1950&#8217;s. Corn is up 342%! Wheat is up 290% while both Soy beans and Alfalfa are up about 170%. Similar sorts of yield gains have occurred in Europe, Australia, Japan and other regions of the world as well.</p>
<p>Data presented by researchers from the Department of Soil Sciences at the University of Wisconsin Madison shows that while these great advances in crop yield have occurred in the last 50 years nutrient content has been under siege and declining. Similarly, a review of data published by the USDA&#8217;s ARC Nutrient Data Laboratory shows &#8220;a sharp decline in the minerals, vitamins and other nutrients in foods since the last comprehensive survey&#8221;, about 20 years ago.<br />

<strong>NEW EVIDENCE ON NUTRIENT DEPLETION</strong></p>
<p>Recent data published by Dr. David Thomas, a primary healthcare practitioner and independent researcher, looked at the difference between UK governments published tables for nutrient content published in 1940 and again in 2002. The comparison was eye-opening. It showed that the iron content of 15 different varieties of meat had decreased 47%. Dairy products had shown similar falls; a 60% drop in iron and up to a 90% drop in copper.</p>
<p><strong>GREATER AVAILABILITY VERSUS LESS VALUE.</strong></p>
<p>It is true that in the modern world of the industrial nations, fruits and vegetables availability is at an all time high. If we want it, it&#8217;s there. On the other hand despite this increased availability, fruit and vegetable consumption has not increased in the population. Indeed in many population sub-groups it has declined. When this knowledge is coupled to the reported declines in nutrient levels in foods, it has many healthcare providers, scientists, researchers and government officials looking for answers as to how we can hope to sustain the nutritional value and balance of our foods while needing to produce more and more from the same soils to feed an ever-growing population. So far the path ahead is uncertain at best.</p>
<p><strong>NEW STUDIES SHOW PROTECTION CONNECTION BETWEEN TEA, FRUIT AND VEGETABLE CONSUMPTION AND <a href="http://ugogirlwear.com/women-health.php">WOMEN&#8217;S HEALTH</a>.<br />

Tea and Ovarian Cancer Risk: researchers at the karolinska Institute Division of Nutritional Epidemiology in Stockholm, Sweden conducted a 15 year follow-up study of more than 61,000 women aged 40 to 76. Their evidence, published in the archives of Internal Medicine (2005; 165 (22): 2683-2686) showed that those women who consumed tea on a regular basis had a dramatically lower risk for ovarian cancer. Tea drinkers who averaged less than one cup per day equaled an 18% risk reduction. One or more cups per day provided a 24% risk reduction and 2 or more cups a day showed a 46% risk reduction. As you might expect, these findings prompted the researchers to conclude &#8220;Results suggest that tea consumption is associated with a reduced risk of ovarian cancer.&#8221;</p>
<p>Soy and Women Health: Publishing their work in the January 15, 2006 issue of Cancer Research, a team of researchers from West Forest University, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA concluded that soy phytoestrogens may protect against breast cancer risk in post menopausal women. According to researchers from John Hopkins University presenting data at the November 15, 2005 meeting of the American Heart Association, consuming soy protein (20 grams per day for 6 weeks) reduced two strong indicators for coronary heart disease in postmenopausal African American women. The result show that LDL-cholesterol and another cholesterol marker known as LDL-P (P=particle number) were decreased in women taking soy protein, regardless of age or race.</p>

<p>Women are regarded as the backbone of the society. She has to play different roles like &#8211; daughter, wife, mother, grandmother etc. In midst of all these roles, she forgets her own identity. She forgets to take care of herself. The family and the society are too selfish in only extracting from her and not giving her back anything. Today&#8217;s women are not only confined to home. She has to balance both home and work front. It is said that a woman who &#8216;rocks the cradle rules the world&#8217;. She is a multitasker.<br />

There is a saying that &#8216;Health is wealth&#8217;. But the question is &#8211; Are our women looking after their health? The answer is NO. The urban women though conscious but is still unable to look after her health because of multitasking activities. The rural women is illiterate, weak (as per societal norms) and neglected forever. She manages her family, cooks their meal but always cannot arrange for her own. The family remains indifferent. It is not only a social problem. The main cause behind this is poor economic status. They suffer from chronic energy deficiency. India is among the highest number of cases of anemia and the reason is high cost of health facility, poor food quality and low status of women. Social restriction on women mobility also contribute for lesser health care for women.</p>
<p>Health is her fundamental right but there is nobody to give her. Women empowerment has not translated to a substantial difference for over half the country&#8217;s women. They still feel that they live for others but not for themselves.</p>
<p>The problem can be sorted out only if women become conscious about themselves. Gender equity in health care must be achieved for the prosperity of the country.<strong>Random Posts:</strong>

<strong>Acne</strong> is the most common skin disease that affects males and females of various ages and occurs in every race. In adults though, more women than men are afflicted with acne. <strong>Adult women</strong> may suffer from acne especially if they were prone to it during their teenage years. In addition pregnancy and coming on or off birth control pills can have a very strong effect on acne breakouts. <strong>Acne in adult women</strong> can be a result of fluctuating hormones that occur naturally as we mature. Also, some experts have noticed that adult women acne is on the rise and this may be partly because of the stressful lives we lead nowadays. Some women get acne for the first time as adults. Adult women usually get acne on their chins and around their mouths. Although acne is usually not a serious health threat, it can be a source of significant emotional distress.<br />

Acne is caused by overactive oil glands that get clogged. Acne is the term for plugged pores (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples, and even deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) that occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and even the upper arms. Most commonly, acne refers to clogged pores that turn into blackheads and whiteheads. Blackheads result when a pore is partially blocked, allowing some of the trapped sebum (oil), bacteria, and dead skin cells to slowly drain to the surface. Blackheads often take more time to clear up than whiteheads. The black color is not caused by dirt so frequent face washing will not get rid of them. Whiteheads result when a pore is completely blocked, trapping sebum (oil), bacteria, and dead skin cells, causing a white appearance on the surface. Whiteheads are normally disappear quicker than blackheads.</p>
<p>Although some women feel that their acne is aggravated and stimulated by certain foods; particularly chocolate, colas, peanuts, shellfish and fatty foods, there is no scientific evidence that has found a link between diet and acne. For mild acne, most of the over the counter remedies work fine. See a doctor if you want quicker relief since prescription medicines like oral antibiotics and topical antibiotics work very well for most people.</p>
<p>Be aware that cosmetics are one of the largest contributing factors to acne in adult women. Women can prevent and reduce the occurrences of acne breakouts to some degree by some simple methods. If you use cosmetics, such as foundation, blush, eye shadow, moisturizers wash them off thoroughly at bedtime. The best types of cosmetics to use for oily or acne prone skin, are either oil-free, non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic cosmetics. But not all &#8220;oil-free&#8221; moisturizers and cosmetics are oil free; some contain oil-like synthetics that can provoke acne-prone skin. Many lanolin derivatives are also harmful to acne-prone individuals so check ingredients. Choose oil-free hair care products. Keep you hair away from your face especially when exercising. If you have oily hair, wash it regularly to reduce oil.
